Back from Gamescom 2023: Updates and The Road Ahead

Hello everyone,

I’ve just returned from Gamescom 2023, and what an experience it was! I had the privilege of delivering two talks: one on the intricacies of crafting large worlds in Unreal Engine 5 and another on the innovative use of ChatGPT as a personal assistant for game developers. Both sessions were enlightening, and I’m grateful for the engaging interactions and feedback.

With Gamescom behind me, it’s time to dive back into the development of “The Wickie.” While the narrative system is functioning smoothly, there are areas that require immediate attention. The absence of a journal system and some user interface challenges are on top of my list. My immediate priorities include:

Project Cleanup: Streamlining the project folder to enhance efficiency.

Lighting Optimization: Reworking the lighting elements to ensure they’re both effective and resource-efficient.

Foliage Management: Removing unused foliage to declutter the game environment.

I’m also exploring the addition of a new tool to my toolkit to expedite the developmental workflow. Procedural Content Generation (PCG) has already been a game-changer, and I’m eager to see how further integrations can enhance the development process.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the organizers and attendees of DevCom and Gamescom. Being invited to such a prestigious event was an honor, and I’m deeply appreciative of the opportunity.

Looking ahead, my focus will be unwaveringly on “The Wickie” as we approach the holiday season, interspersed with my consultancy commitments. Your continued support and feedback are invaluable to me. If you have any questions, suggestions, or just want to chat, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Warm regards,

Cris Robson
